Even though there has been a 50% rise in India’s GDP since 2013, according to The Economist, more than one-third of the world’s malnourished population lives in India. The World Bank redoubles this with an estimation that India is one of the world’s highest ranking countries for prevalence of children with malnutrition — this has a dire effect on not just the lives of individuals, but also on the country through its productivity and economic growth.
Nutrition deficiencies can be devastating to both individuals and societies, with people suffering from malnutrition being more prone to having infectious diseases, which in turn increases the rate of mortality. Malnourished women are also more likely to have unhealthy babies, which can lead to the creation of a cycle of under-nourished families.
It is therefore important for us to tackle the issue of nutrition, and try to make sure that the resources and information to know about healthy and proper nutrition are accessible, and also create interventions that help provide children and people the opportunity to feed themselves. Even though there are measures put in place by the government, it is important for children to know what healthy nutrition is, and how they can achieve it both in and out of school!
